Based at Christchurch's iconic Cathedral Square, our flat, fast and spectator friendly course takes you on a scenic tour of quintessentially Christchurch landmarks such as Hagley Park and the Avon River.
The proposed 2017 route is based on the successful 2016 route. We anticipate minor alterations prior to race day to further reduce the temporary impact on traffic flows, the transport network and the ongoing Christchurch rebuild, and to enhance the runner experience.
Participants do need to be aware that parts of the course run through the Red Zone where road surfaces are not first rate. We will make improvements where dangerous, but there may be short sections of gravel where roads have been left unsealed since the earthquakes.
Public Roading Information Key road closures and controls for the 2017 event are listed below. The proposed route and road closures were advertised on Wednesday 21st March. Organisational aspects around the proposed 2017 ASB Christchurch Marathon’s route and operation include:
> Route changes to reduce the extent of road closures, including:
> The route will no longer follow Fitzgerald Avenue and will only cross it.
> Hereford Street and Latimer Square will no longer be part of the route.
> A reduced length of Manchester St will be used.
> An operations centre including emergency services, event and traffic operations will be established to make sure the city can be kept moving during the proposed event.
> The earlier start time of 8:00am will be retained
> 2016’s increased community communication and signage will be retained.
> Detours to minimise delays will be installed, signposted and actively managed.
